Chapter Fourteen
The smell of glue filled the small room. Hannah closed her eyes waiting for her stomach to stop churning. It didn't work. Half a dozen munchkins below the age of five puttered around the tot-sized table. Hannah sat on a tot-sized chair and tried to keep her head up and her stomach down.
What a hypocrite. Sitting here in Sunday School teaching little children while just last night she did God-knows-what with a man she'd met just two weeks ago.
"Miss Hannah, I gots glue on my shirt."
Hannah turned toward the small voice. "Okay, honey."
Holding her breath, she blotted the glue from the boy's shirt. "There you go, Matthew."
Matthew wrapped his arms around her neck and hugged. "Thank you, Miss Hannah."
"Oh," Hannah moaned until her head stopped spinning. "You're welcome, sweetheart."
A glance at her watch gave her the good news that it was time to head to the sanctuary. Just another hour and she could go home, swallow a handful of aspirin and collapse in her bed.
"Let's get our things put away, children. We still have to practice our song before we go to church."
She led the children in picking up the crayons and tiny shreds of paper and round-tipped plastic scissors. All the while the thought that had woken her up this morning rolled around and around her head.
What exactly happened last night? How did she get home? She remembered dancing with Logan at the roadhouse. And the next memory...there wasn't one. Then she woke up in her bed at home. That wouldn't be so bad, because any other morning she could have assumed Winnie or Livvy had brought her home.
But she could almost remember leaving the roadhouse with Logan. On the back of his Harley. And something about boots.
"Oh." Another wave of nausea smashed against her stomach. But there was no time to wonder about her possible depravity. The children were lined up to practice their song.
"Okay, everybody ready?" The little heads bobbed eagerly. She raised her hand to mark the beat. "Let me hear it now." She dropped her hand and mouthed the first words of the song.
Six little voices joined together in enthusiastic praise that made her smile in spite of her headache.
"Two little eyes to look to God."
Six little fingers pointed at eyes, then upward toward Heaven.
"Two little ears to hear his word."
She guided the children through their rehearsal, loving each one of them for their innocence. When they'd finished, she gathered them and hugged them tight.
"That was beautiful. I want you to sing loud just like that so God can hear you, okay?"
"We will, Miss Hannah," the children chorused.
She led her little flock out of the classroom and down the hall toward the sanctuary. They waited in the vestibule until the congregation got settled and Pastor Harmon greeted them.
"Good morning."
"Good morning," the congregation responded in one voice.
"Oh, you can do better than that," Pastor Harmon said.
The congregation obediently replied louder, "Good morning."
"That's it. Welcome to our service this morning. Before we begin, Hannah Murphy's pre-school class is going to raise their voices in praise to our Lord.
